If you have been around for any length of time, you realize that sometimes, celebrities do some pretty stupid things. Some of them tend to be more in the spotlight than others and they may say something or do something that is going to land them in hot water. They just seem to be constantly surrounded by controversy. Roseanne is one of those celebrities and it doesn’t matter if it is her singing of The National Anthem or getting matching tattoos with her then-husband, Tom Arnold, she is going to raise some eyebrows.
Most recently, the star of ‘Roseanne’ sent out a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, the former aide to US Pres. Barack Obama. In an unprecedented move, the ABC network decided to cancel the show within a couple hours after the tweet and they fired her. The unfortunate thing is, the entire cast and production crew also lost their jobs at the same time.
Everybody who happened to work on the show with Roseanne put a lot of distance between them and her immediately after the Tweet was sent out. Some of them even beat the network to the punch! They referred to the racist Tweet as being abhorrent but they are still going to have to pay the piper because of her foul deed.
Some of the cast members were willing to drop the show entirely on principle. Others were disappointed, either because they enjoyed the work or because they didn’t want to disappoint the fans. There is no doubt that the show was wildly popular from the moment it came out this season.
Sarah Gilbert, Rosanne’s on-screen daughter Darlene, had the following to say: “This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us, as we’ve created a show that we believe in, are proud of, and that audiences love – one that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member.”
Many of the other cast members also had something similar to say and the millions of fans of the show also seem to share in those remarks as well. That is why something interesting may just be in the works; a spinoff series that is not going to include Roseanne!
Interestingly, ABC may not completely be through with the show as many of the cast are quite famous on their own. This includes Sarah Gilbert, Laura Metcalf and, of course, John Goodman. In addition, the show was in line to be renewed for an additional season so there is already space for it in the lineup.
There are a number of issues that seem to be hampering progress. Perhaps one of the most noteworthy is the fact that Roseanne is responsible for much of the show and she even conceived most of the characters. In other words, even if she wasn’t included in the new spinoff series, she will still gain financial benefit from it.
In an effort to overcome the problem, ABC may just create a brand-new series that uses the actors but does not necessarily use the same story line. It is known that many of the writers for Roseanne are still employed with ABC, so there is the opportunity to move forward with it.
If they do come up with a new show, we are sure that there is going to be a jab at Barr for her racial faux pas and inappropriate use of Twitter! I can’t wait to see it.
