Rum and Coke lovers, rejoice! America’s favorite cola brand, Coca-Cola (sorry Pepsi, but it’s true), is floating a new product in Japan that combines two of our most beloved things: drinking and the sweet, sweet taste of Coke. I don’t know about you, but I am truly awful at mixing drinks, so having Coke do this for me is looking like a better idea by the minute.
Japan is known for its edgy, delicious food culture that caters to a market full of people who are never afraid to try something new and unique. That’s why it makes total sense that Coke would decide to give this new move a go in Japan. Basically, I have to move there because there’s nothing I love more than trying new cuisine!
The leaders of Coke’s Japan division are confident that the drink is going to be a total hit in bars, and to be honest, I am too because HELLO. And beyond just common sense, they have some actual models of similar products selling well.
Chu-Hi is an alcoholic cola beverage that’s already on the market in Japan and for obvious reasons people love it. Jorge Garduno, who’s the head of Coke’s Japan division, said of Chu-Hi, “This is a canned drink that includes alcohol; traditionally, it is made with a distilled beverage called shōchū and sparkling water, plus some flavoring.”
Basically, this stuff isn’t going to get you trashed if that’s what you’re after but it will give you a nice, sugary buzz.
Sadly, my fellow Americans, we’re going to have to sit tight for a while. Coca-Cola plans to see how things go in the Japanese market to decide whether or not they think it’d work outside of that context. Like I said, the Japanese market is pretty unique in that it’s super open to trying new and exciting things so a product doing well over there is no guarantee that it’d do well elsewhere. The execs will just have to feel that out for themselves, but for what it’s worth, Coke, I say we need it.
