Daughter Shares Alzheimer’s Devastating Progression Through Her Mom’s Crocheting

Visual aids are a great way to tell a story. When people struggle to understand the gravity of certain situations, a photo can convey a message that words are unable to. One Reddit user decided to illustrate the saddening effects of Alzheimer’s recently by taking a photo of their mother’s crochet work. As you can see, this disease robs those who are afflicted of so much.

The early crochet work is clearly designed. Multiple yarn colors are used. There is a sense of craftsmanship. As the rows go on, the progression (or lack thereof) is laid completely bare. The final pieces on display do not even look like crochet. They are actually resemble random balls of yarn. This visual decline paints a very dramatic picture when it comes to the mental decline that Alzheimer’s patients experience.

Only a few years have passed between the creation of the first piece in this photo and the last one. It just goes to show how fast we can be robbed of our ability to think and create in the manner we have become accustomed to. The doctor had recommended for this patient to continue to crochet in order to keep their brain active.

As you can see, this advice has ended up being rather futile. The Reddit user who posted the photo did not expect to go viral and they did not expect the picture to resonate with as many other people as it has. Thanks to this courageous post, a dialogue has been started about Alzheimer’s. This is a heartbreaking disease that has forever changed the lives of so many and speaking out can provide us with some small sense of solace.

The photo is being used to provide education to those who may not be as familiar with the disease. Organizations need our support if we are going to make Alzheimer’s a thing of the past and photos like these are a crucial part of that. Losing a loved one before they have even had a chance to pass on to a better place is something that no person should ever be forced to experience.

Please be sure to pass this story along to raise the necessary awareness. The Alzheimer’s Association is also doing fine work to assist those who are afflicted and those who wish to provide a donation are urged to visit their website as soon as possible. Let’s all do our part to help those who are suffering from this awful disease.
