It’s hard to believe it’s been a little over 10 years since beloved actor Heath Ledger — known best for his roles in “10 Things I Hate About You,” “Brokeback Mountain,” and perhaps most notably, “The Dark Knight” — passed away, leaving behind friends, family, fans, and the most important person in his life — his two-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose.
Ledger died on January 22, 2008, at just 28 years old. At the time, he’d been mixing lethal doses of prescription pills to combat his insomnia, which led to an accidental overdose and his untimely death.
“For as long as I’d known him, he had bouts with insomnia,” said actress Michelle Williams, Ledger’s former fiancée and Matilda Rose’s mother. “He had too much energy. His mind was turning, turning turning — always turning.”
Speaking about the news of Ledger’s passing, Larry Williams, Michelle’s dad, said, “It has just broken everybody’s heart in my family. My heart goes out to everyone, his family, my family, we are just very saddened. The saddest thing is his daughter, whom he just loved dearly.”
Though Matilda Rose was forced to grow up without a father, it appears she’s doing well. It’s probably helped that she’s spent most of the past decade out of the spotlight. But recent photos of the now teenager have been making headlines — namely, because she’s the spitting image of her late dad.
“When Heath was around, she looked so much like him, we used to say ‘It’s Heath in pig tails’. Now everything she does, the way she rides a skateboard, reminds me of Heath,” explained Ledge’s sister, Kate, in the documentary “I Am Heath Ledger.”
I wonder whether Matilda Rose will decide to follow in her mom and dad’s footsteps. Considering how talented her family is and was, there’s no doubt in my mind that she’d make a great actor or entertainer.
