June 5 is a day that shook the fashion world and saddened many people around the globe. It was the day that Kate Spade took her own life in her apartment in NYC. The cause of death has been ruled a suicide and a note for her 13-year-old daughter was left behind. That note for Frances Beatrice Spade read: “Bea – I have always loved you. This is not your fault. Ask Daddy!” According to reports, Andy Spade, Kate’s husband was at home when she died.
Her daughter was in school when the suicide took place. Andy was accompanied by police when he went to pick her up from school.
The suicide took place on Tuesday morning in the Upper East Side home. Kate hanged herself using a scarf, and a housekeeper found her at 10:20 am. The note was also found at that time.
Kate and Andy met in college and later got married. They became business partners as well as life partners, launching the Kate Spade Handbag line in 1993. The company then went on to build an empire based on their very popular clothing, jewelry and accessories.
There are more than 300 Kate Spade New York retail shops around the world. Kate was active in the business but then stepped aside to focus on raising their daughter. She eventually returned and basically picked up where she left off; building the shoe and handbag brand and launching the new accessory line. That line, Francis Valentine, was named after her daughter. In 2016, she said, “I needed a break and I really wanted to raise my daughter. People asked me, ‘Don’t you miss it?’ I really didn’t. I mean, I loved what I was doing, but I didn’t miss it as much as I thought I might.”
David Spade, the popular comedian and actor is her brother in law. He went to social media to share his memories about Kate and to express his shock at what took place. He remembers her as being a very funny woman. An image was posted on Instagram that was captioned: “Fuzzy picture but I love it. Kate and I during Christmas family photos. We had so much fun that day. She was so sharp and quick on her feet. She could make me laugh so hard.”
Fans from around the world were heartbroken after the news broke. They expressed their condolences on Twitter to the family. Those condolences included the following:
“Ask any girl around my age about getting her first boxy Kate Spade bag and she’ll probably have a story to tell you. It was a magnificently simple cultural marker” – Abby Gardner
“I am heartbroken about the news of Kate Spade. I have worn her clothes many, many times. They were colorful, bold, cheerful, and encouraged women to find the twinkly person inside them. You couldn’t walk into her boutiques and not smile. Rest In Peace, Kate.” – Actress Mindy Kaling
Kates family made the following statement: “We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly. We would ask that our privacy is respected as we grieve during this very difficult time.”
