Most of us lock our doors to keep out intruders, but unfortunately, there are other insidious ways they can get inside our homes.
Just ask Heather and Adam Schreck. Like many other parents, they keep a baby monitor in their 10-month-old daughter’s room to make sure she’s safe. However, I’m sure they questioned even having one after what happened one night.
Heather quickly became terrified around midnight after she heard what sounded like a man shouting. When she checked the monitor on her cell phone, she was disturbed to find the camera moving on its own.
“About the time I saw it moving, I also heard a voice again start screaming at my daughter,” Heather recalled. “He was screaming, ‘Wake up baby. Wake up baby.’ Then just screaming at her trying to wake her up.”
Adam leaped out of bed and ran to Emma’s room, where he watched as the camera swiveled away from Emma and focused directly on him.
“Then it screamed at me. Some bad things, some obscenities. So I unplugged the camera,” he said. They’d later learn that a complete stranger had hacked the software that operated Emma’s baby monitor. The Schrecks were shocked that this was even possible.
“You do kind of feel violated in a way.”
According to tech and security experts, devices like Emma’s baby monitor have little to no security to protect users, making it easy for hackers to access the system and potentially steal your identity.
“Any kind of Internet-connected device essentially could be subjected to this. It’s not just that they want to get in and mess with your camera. More sophisticated hackers know they can use this as a launching off point to get into your network and potentially steal your ID or use your network to launch malicious attacks against someone else,” said Dave Hatter, solutions expert for Infinity Partners.

This really goes to show how important it is to have secure and separate passwords for all of our devices. It’s so scary to know that someone could be watching us at any moment!
