In the past few years, we haven’t heard much from Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne, whose unforgettable hits such as “Sk8er Boi” and “Complicated” made her a huge pop-punk star.
In 2015, the 33-year-old was diagnosed with Lyme Disease, a condition that had a huge impact on her life and wellbeing. “I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move,” let alone produce new music. “I thought I was dying.”
But in the years following her diagnosis, Lavigne has been doing much better healthwise. In December 2016, she announced she that she was working on a new album — her first since her 2013 self-titled fifth major studio record.
“It’s a really powerful record,” she told E! in a red carpet interview. “I’ve been working on this for three years. I can actually say this time I’m going to be done with this album in two weeks and I will put it out this year.”
“I’ve been writing songs that are really just powerful and true and honest and sincere and I think people will really be able to relate to it,” she said. “I’ve gone through a lot of personal stuff in the past two years and so I’ve really drawn from that. I mean, I always do, but this album is so different… I am producing, too, the songs. It’s more of a vocal record and just like, hearing the lyrics and really hearing the emotion in the vocal. It’s very piano-driven, too.”
On Sunday, she attended the 25th annual Race To Erase MS Gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, showing off her stunning new look.
“I haven’t even been able to come to one of these events for a few years,” she said. “I’ve been tucked away and hibernating and healing, and it’s very up and down. Everything is brighter when you go through an experience like that.”
“I’ve always been a really grounded and grateful person, but it changes a lot. The simple things in life are what mean the most, really. I’m happy to be here, happy to be supporting.”
“I know my fans have been like waiting for a long time and some of them are unhappy. They’re like, ‘OK, what is going on with this album?'” she said.
“But trust me, I’m doing everything I can and I just want it to be ready and everything to be perfect and a lot of like, care has gone into this. All the waiting and the hard work on my end will pay off, I promise.”
Doesn’t she look amazing? We’re so glad Lavigne is feeling well again, and we can’t wait to hear her new album!
